Identifying your problem:
Holes:
Moles have two undeniable signatures in yards and mulch beds. One of those are mole mounds. Large and sometimes even small dirt piles are the infamous hills we sometimes make mountains out of. Mounds are primarily found in winter or in a drought when the mole makes deeper tunnels and has to bring the dirt out.

Smooth edged hole, sometimes disfigured, in the top of the mole tunnel is most likely erosion and is a good sign the mole is not using that tunnel system any longer.

Holes dug at the edge of sidewalks, patios and other structures and surfaces are the beginning of what could be an extensive undermining project by chipmunks. They also will enter crawl spaces through crawl vents with damaged screens or other holes and cracks in foundations.
