Small dime to quarter size holes with sharp clean edges going straight down into a mole run from the top is usually a sign of voles (meadow mice) or shrews. Accessing and using mole tunnels, especially after the mole has been caught or abandoned the tunnel system. Voles, or shrews, will also make small tunnels on the mulch surface. The tunnel is noticeably smaller than mole tunnels and are usually seen in early spring, after the snow melts.
